Info on Accutane.
This medication is used to treat severe cystic acne (also known as nodular acne) that has not responded to other treatment (e.g., benzoyl peroxide or clindamycin applied to the skin or tetracycline or minocycline taken by mouth). It belongs to a class of drugs known as retinoids. It works by decreasing facial oil (sebum) production. High amounts of sebum can lead to severe acne. If left untreated, severe acne may cause permanent scarring.
Backstory on why I chose Accutane
After many many different products and many MANY years of suffering of my mild to moderate acne, along with cystic acne, I finally went into my dermatologist. He had asked me quite a few different questions regarding my skin type, what I have tried, my family history, etc. Immediately after asking all of these questions he said "I would like to put you on Accutane." I honestly at first was very upset at his response, I mean yes I have acne and I get cystic acne but I thought to myself "Wow does my face really look THAT bad that he wants to put me on a medication that is used for severe acne?" Yes, while my face is nowhere near clear it isn't as bad as it could be. But my doctor explained that because of my extreme attempts of getting rid of the acne; all the pills, topicals, washes, etc. and along with my family history of acne (particularly the fun cystic stuff) that Acutance would be my best choice at this time and get rid of the acne most likely for good. All I knew about Acutance was that it was a drug for acne and that was it, so I asked him about it and he gave me loads of information. Because I am a female we are required to take 2 pregnancy tests before we start the drug so I took my first pregnancy test that day. I then went home and called to my mom and searched up on the drug. I was very afraid of the drug and had no intention of ever doing it after I read the horror stories and spoke with my mom. A month later I went to the doctor and told him I was not going to go through with the drug. I got a different sample topical and antibiotics to try to find something that works with my skin. The next day I woke up with 3 LARGE and very painful cystic acne spots and called the doctor right when they opened to get a appointment to have them drained and the start the Acutance. I'm so sick of having to hid my face, and not wanting to go out because of my acne. Even when I do I have to cake on the makeup to even feel somewhat confident... So let the journey begin now and I hope my journal will help you with your choice in starting Acutance or not. I started 40 mg Claravis on 11/7/2013 and will post weekly updates on my journey!
